Service Description

Hello, my name is Lucy Weltner. I am a certified math teacher in MA with experience teaching 7th and 8th grade. I have also tutored most levels of math, from sixth grade math through calculus. I am looking for tutees who need any kind of math help (up to and including AB calculus), but I specialize in algebra, pre-algebra and SAT prep. I am looking for students in the Boston area (Newton, Needham, Brookline, etc) and I am willing to meet students up to 1/2 hour away from Cambridge (driving distance) for no extra cost. If you are interested, please give me a little background information about the student's strengths, weaknesses, learning style etc, and let me know what math topics the student needs help with -- this information will give me a chance to prepare and personalize my instruction.

About Me

My name is Lucy Weltner, and I'm a 24 year old certified teacher with a passion for math and student centered teaching practices. I developed a love of math tutoring in college, when I volunteered as a tutor in a middle school classroom. I found it fascinating to figure out why students struggled to understand certain concepts, and rewarding to find the right questions and explanations that would guide a student to a better understanding. I soon branched out and began tutoring students at many different levels (from sixth graders struggling with fractions, to advanced high schoolers, to college students taking an introductory calculus class). My experiences inspired me to teach, and I went on to earn a master's degree from the Boston University School of Education. There, I developed a passion for student centered math pedagogy, which guides children to make sense of mathematics in a way that works for them. After graduating, I spent a semester in a short term teaching position, and I am now looking for tutees. I enjoy getting to know different kinds of learners and matching my instruction to meet their needs. I struggled with math and a child and teenager, and I am both passionate about the subject and understanding of the challenges it can present for students.
