Service Description

Hello, My name is Keon. I am a native Korean instructor studying at UC Berkeley. I write lesson plans with many examples to help you learn as much as possible during each time we meet. I require that students take at least 2 one-hour lessons per week to maximize their learning. There will be some homework after each lesson for review. I started teaching Korean during a summer break before my junior year in high school to find out whether I enjoyed enough to teach while in college. Since then, I have taught people of all ages, including high school and college students needing help for their Korean classes at school, people in their early twenties excited for their career in Korea, and people in their forties and fifties who have wanted to learn Korean for so long to communicate with their Korean side of the family. To give you further insight into my teaching experience, I have been teaching for now two and a half years. When I was not in school, I either went to students' house or invited them to my house to have lessons. When I was in school, we had lessons over Skype. For each lesson, I have prepared a one-hour plan with complete beginner in mind. I share screenshots of the lesson plan over Skype before each lesson so students have an idea of what we will be learning next lesson. Together, we look at a series of examples that I have written in the plan to help us understand Korean grammar. Students are encouraged to please ask me any questions relevant to Korean language and culture anytime during the lesson (please mark them down somewhere or leave them on Skype for us to visit them at the beginning of next class). That includes questions about words or phrases you heard in K-pop songs and cultural norms you saw in K-dramas and Korean TV shows but would want further explanation. If for some reason, I cannot give you a satisfactory answer, I make sure to provide an in-depth response shortly after the lesson through Skype chat or at the beginning of our next lesson. After each lesson, you will be given short HW exercises to help you review the materials discussed in the lesson. At the beginning of next lesson, I will correct you if there are mistakes.

About Me

I am currently studying at UC Berkeley intending to double major in Philosophy and Psychology and minor in French. I am native in Korean, fluent in English, and intermediate in French. Once I found that I loved helping and observing students progress over time, there was no doubt that I wanted to continue in college. So I did from the very beginning of my first semester here at Cal! I am truly glad that I made the right decision. From the very first lesson, we will be learning how to construct a basic sentence. I believe that knowing how to make sentences is critical not only in writing but also in sustaining a meaningful conversation that does not fall short after a few exchanges with ????? and ?????. Along the way, I will introduce to you important vocabulary to know (pronouns, verbs, nouns, adjectives, etc.) which we can then incorporate into our sentences. I also highly encourage you to use apps such as LingoDear, Memrise, and Quizlet to learn new words. There are so many free apps why not give one a try :) In our first lesson, we will briefly go over ?? (hangul) chart for me to identify where I can help you the most in regards to pronunciation. I will also explain the historical context of ??, as I believe a holistic understanding of any language provides appropriate building blocks to appreciate and respect the language. Then we will learn how we can use the pronoun (I) and two verbs (to be and to have) in a basic SOV sentence structure in Korean. After the lesson, I will send you via email audio recordings of my pronouncing each combination of consonants (including 5 double consonants) and vowels for your reference when you are practicing. There are 190! Also, please feel free to ask me anytime to send you my recording of any word or phrase to help your learning. I want to remind you that lessons are structured in a way that I see best appropriate to help you. But also understand that lessons are shaped by students' interests and priorities so please feel free to direct the lessons as you see fit. I would appreciate if you can tell me your priorities (speaking, listening, reading, writing, pronunciation) and how you learn best for me to be best prepared. On a final note, I want to be clear that I am looking for motivated students who want to improve quickly with at least 2 one-hour lessons per week. I highly encourage 3 one-hour lessons but I understand the time dedication involved. I am available M-TH 2-10pm (PT) and F 5-10pm (PT) and I am flexible on the weekends :) Let me know when you are ready to schedule our first lesson! I am so excited to help you out! Hope to hear from you! ? ??! Keon
